Atomic Bomb Dome

The Atomic Bomb Dome is a part of Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park which is in the center of Hiroshima city and the dome has been preserved in the same state as immediately after the bombing.

The purpose of the preservation is to establish the memory of nuclear horrors and advocate world peace. This Atomic Bomb Dome was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. (2:12)

Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima.

This shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and several buildings and possessions in this shrine are designated as national treasures.

When the tide rises and fills the inlet, it looks as if the shrine floats on the water. The gate appears to be floating at high tide, when the tide is low, the gate can be accessed on foot. (2:57)

Soba is a traditional Japanese noodle besides Udon, and it's generally made of buckwheat flour. Noodle is very popular and we eat Udon, Ramen noodle, Yakisoba (Baked noodle), of course, Pasta too.

Rice cake making

"Rice cake making" is a popular event during New Year holiday.

Start steaming rice in a basket, then put it into a mortar to mash. Pound rice with a mallet.

We call rice cake "Mochi" and use exclusive "Mochi rice" that is more sticky than ordinary rice. Mochi has very unique texture.

The statue of Buddha

The statue of Buddha is made from cast bronze, which was then plated with gold. It was consecrated in 752, but was damaged and repaired several times in the following century. The height is approx. 16m. Located in Nara Prefecture.

Kawakanjo - Lighted tall torch

"Kawakanjo" is a raft that is made of bamboo and straw. A tall torch (approx. 5m) stands on the raft and to be lighted. The purpose of this event is to hold a service for the departed souls by drowning accidents and to hope for the safety.

Tezutsu Hanabi - Fireworks

Tezutsu Hanabi is the traditional hand-held fireworks contained in bamboo cylinders, shooting sparks around 15 feet into the air. Young men in a town are never allowed to run away and have to keep holding the cylinders until the fireworks end. They are just amazing !!

Yakitori BBQ - Grilled chicken

Yakitori is grilled chicken speared on sticks. All different parts of the chicken, thighs, skin, liver, etc. can be used for yakitori. There are tons of Yakitori restaurants in Japan, and are fancied especially by businessmen. It's also popular outdoor BBQs! Our party did Yakitori BBQ at riverside park.

Toro Nagashi - Paper lanterns

"Toro Nagashi" is a Buddhist ceremony that usually held during summer period. "Toro" means lantern, whilst "Nagashi" means to stream.

A paper lantern that lit by a candle inside and streamed down a river. Usually a message is written on the outside of the paper lantern. The purpose of this event is to send off ancestor's spirits.

MEIJI JINGU - Shinto shrine

Meiji Jingu is the Shinto shrine dedicated to the divine souls of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. The original shrine was built in 1920 and then destroyed during World War II. The present shrine was rebuilt in 1958.
